Pedestrian Crossings

Sir,—The opening sentence of “No Safety’s” letter should be read at least 50 times by every one of our traffic officers. A former city councillor, and a world traveller at that, confessed to m e that she was more scared in crossing our streets than she was in so doing in London or New York. “No Safety” is right in blaming the propensity of our motorists for making righthand turns for much of our traffic congestion. As one with quite extensive experience of Australian conditions, I am amused, not to say amazed, by the sluggish movement when our traffic receives the green light. Recently Mr Thomas noted the upsurge of cycling on the footpath. It is simply rampant in this city. This statement will be “poopoohed,” of that I am quite sure.—Yours, etc., SAFETY LAST. June 10, 1966.
