FARM YOUTH EXCHANGE
Extension To
N.Z. Sought
The extension to New Zealand of an international farm youth exchange programme under which young men and women travel to another country to work there for a period is being sought.
The Dominion executive of the New Zealand Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs decided to set up a subcommittee which, it is hoped, will be able to make submissions about the scheme to the annual conference of the federation, which is being held in Christchurch this week. In a letter to the organising secretary of the federation (Mr H. C. A. Wards), Mr H. H. Kristensen, the supervisor and co-ordinator of the programme, said he initiated it in 1963. Last year 178 young farmers from Norway and Denmark participated in the scheme, and this year there would be about 200 from Denmark, Norway, and Germany. In addition this year about 20 young Canadians were going to Europe for eight months. Young farmers who had participated in the programme had asked him to try to extend it by including New Zealand so that European young farmers, for example, could spend six months in Canada and six months in New Zealand. Mr T. Meß. Burnside, chairman of the Dominion farm cadet committee of Federated Farmers, promised to raise the scheme ,at the next meeting of the committee at the end of the week.
