HIGHER PAY

Coal Yard Workers Wage increases for all coal, coke, and firewood workers, except those in the Northland and Taranaki industrial districts, are listed in a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration. An increase in minimum award rates of 14s lOd a week for sawyers and 15s 3d for other workers brings their weekly wages to £l4 17s 6d and £l4 10s respectively. Casual workers receive an increase of 4jd an hour, making the hourly rate for casual sawyers 7s sid and for other casual workers 7s 3d.

Youths between the ages of 18 and 19 receive an increase of 9s lOd a week, those between 19 and 20 an increase of 12s 9d, and those between 20 and 21 an increase of 14s 6d a week. The increases have been back-dated to May 23 this year. Decimal currency equivalents are also given in the award. Workers with 10 years’ service with the same employer are entitled to three weeks’ annual leave instead of the two allowed under the Annual Holidays Act. The award expires on December 3 next year.

Scholarship Winner. —P. R. Wanty, of St Martins School, has won an entrance scholarship to Christ’s College. The scholarship examinations were held on May 27.
