WINGATUI TRIALS
“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. Certain, winner of the Queen Elizabeth Handicap on the opening day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, galloped into favouritism for the Provincial Handicap on Saturday with an impressive trial at Wingatui yesterday. Others to show up in their work included Kumai, Pahi, Flowing Gold, Belfie and Now Or Never. The trestles were 24ft out on the course proper. The going was dead, but drying out. Certain (JI. J. Skelton) ran evenly over seven furlongs. He took 13sec to the furlong for the first five and completed his task in a shade under Imin 33sec.
Now Or Never (J. R. Dowling) equalled this time. His race record recently has been disappointing and he will have to be taken on trust.
Kumai (B. J. Anderton) and the Otago Hurdles favourite Pahi (0. Cleaver) were not ridden out in their six furlongs. They took Imin 22 4-ssec, the last five furlongs In Imin 7 2-ssec and the final three furlongs in 41 2-ssec.
Flying York (E. J. Didham) and his stablemate, Mon Amour <P. J. Silver) were together over six furlongs in Imin 21 2-ssec, the last half-mile in 55 l-osec.
Flowing Gold (R. N. Marsh) and Cassaroha (A. T. Beckett) ran in from the half-mile in 52sec. This time was equalled by Belfie (D. A. Adams).
Mogambo (J. Didham) Impressed by the way he worked over three furlongs. He took 40sec, a time equalled by Glenmorven (R. J. Pledger).
