RACING Gladaub Should Win Sprint At Wingatui

"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. Gladaub, winner of two of his last four races, will return to sprinting in the Members’ Handicap at Wingatui tomorrow. The Gore sprinter is the likely favourite for the second leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s TA.B. double.

Gladaub was an impressive winner as a sprinter at Invercargill in April. More recently he has raced over more ground. He beat all but Manana in the Waimate Cup and last Monday finished fourth to Castle Gregory, Red Siren and Mogambo in the Queen Elizabeth Mile under top-weight of 9-3.

Tomorrow, with G. O. Finn claiming apprentice allowance, Gladaub will carry 9-5, Ulb less than the top-weight Bold Venture.

Bold Venture made a big Impression on Monday when he mastered topweight of 9-12 and outclassed the sprinters in the Empire Handicap.

Bold Venture has won over seven furlongs, but his best performances have been over six and it may be the distance more than the weight which could beat him tomorrow. The Riccarton-trained Mogambo has run two sound races at the meeting. He finished third in the sprint on the first day and was also third among the milers on Monday. Cranbrook, the beaten sprint favourite on Monday, would need to improve. However, he has raced well at Wingatui previously. Big Smoke does not appeal in this field. Azir is in the early stages of a fresh preparation and Balken Boy, a recently promoted hack, might not be up to the class. Just Peter makes most appeal of those near the tail of the handicap. He finished second to Gladuab in an open sprint at Invercargill three starts back.
