REQUEST BY SEAMEN
F.O.L. Unlikely To Act (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. The Federation of Labour sympathises with the aims of striking British seamen but it believes any direct action taken in New Zealand now would not materially help the seamen achieve their objective. Mr T. E. Skinner, president of the F.0.L., said tonight that the federation had cabled the British Trade Union Congress to “ascertain their attitude”.
The future policy of the trade union movement here would be decided when a reply was received from Britain.
Yesterday the striking sea-| men announced they would) ask New Zealand and Australian watersiders to declare] British ships in their ports black. I
Mr Skinner said tonight the F.O.L. had received a cable from the British Seamen’s Union asking for support. He said the Waterside Workers’ Union, the Cooks
and Stewards’ Union, and the Seamen’s Union had received similar cables. Mr Skinner said the three unions and the F.O.L. met in Wellington today and decided any action taken in New Zealand should only be taken through and with the F.O.L.
