RANDOM REMINDER
THE RED CROSS
One of the remarkable things about the Red Cross Society is that It always seems to be doing something new, to be accepting fresh challenges. Its work is tremendously varied, as well as tremendously demanding, but when it goes to the public of Christchurch today with its annual street collection it will have behind it a magnificent record of achievement and ahead, projects of compelling appeal. In Samoa, the effects of the hurricane will be felt for a long time. The New Zealand Red Cross is sending 10 tons of flour and a ton of skimmed milk powder every fortnight until the end of November: the North Canterbury Centre of course will be contribu-
ting to this effort. And at the same time, the New Zealand Red Cross will continue to work in India, helping meet poverty and hunger with milk powder, vitamin tablets and other goods. The society has 220 distribution points in India and is at present handling powder and tablets sent by CORSO as well as through its own efforts. In Christchurch, the meals on wheels service is familiar and remains a wonderful help to the elderly and infirm. The centre also runs a library service for those unable to get out and about: there are some 4600 books and 40 workers to take them into the homes, and to replace them at regular intervals. There is, too, a visiting service for
the lonely, a regular service for the packing of used clothes—about £6OOO worth of good clothing was sent overseas last year—and the training classes in first aid, home nursing and civil defence work which go on steadily. One of the society’s lesser-known activities is the tracing of missing persons. On an international scale, there are still 10,000 requests a month. In Christchurch, the service is used occasionally—eight
people were traced last year. The North Canterbury Centre should do well in its appeal today. If it does not, it is a sad reflection on the people of Christchurch, for no cause could be more deserving, few more urgent
