WELCOME LIFT AS RISES HEAD FALLS
Rises were ahead of falls in yesterday’s share trading for the first time for more than a month—apart from the near-rally last Friday— to give a welcome lift to the market. Bidding was brisk, but turn-over was little better than average. Key stocks were ahead of the market trend.
United Empire Box at 10s 3d, Rothmans at 255, and New Zealand Insurance at 21s 8d each gained Id, while Dominion Breweries rose 2d to 17s 2d and Wright Stephenson sold 3d up at 30s 3d. Northern Steam rose 6d to 6s 8d on higher profit news. Farmers Fertiliser added Is to 435. New Zealand Refrigerating old shares at 13s 9d, Alliance at 9s 9d and Autocrat at 10s 6d were among frequently-traded stocks to lose ground. Each lost 3d. Claude Neon fell Is to 46s 6d and Motor Specialties 2d to 13s Id. In the overseas list E.Z. rose 9d to 20s 6d and B.H.P. moved in sympathy with the Australian market to lose 3d to 51s.
