NEW CHAIRMAN OF PAPARUA COUNTY
Mr D. H. Warren was last night elected chairman of the Paparua County Council to succeed Mr R. J. Roberts, whose death occurred on Sunday. His was the only nomination.
Mr Warren, who is a Prebbleton riding member and the for, »r deputy-chair-man, has bee n the council for 10 years. On a vote, C.. H. W. Bennett was elected deputychairman, defeating Cr. L. P. Manion. The council confirmed procedure in filling extraordinary vacancies caused by Mr Roberts’s death.
The clerk (Mr A. Kelly) said that an election would be held on July 16 for the vacant council Hornby riding and Hornby Licensing Trust seats held by Mr Roberts. Nominations would close at I noon on June 27, and the sup-
plementary roll would dose on June 17. The vacant North Canterbury Hospital Board seat representing Paparua county and Riccarton borough would be filled by agreement between the local bodies, said Mr Kelly. A sub-committee of the councils could go into the appointment. Mr Roberts’s seat on the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board would be filled by decision of the council, said Mr Kelly.
Cr. Manion was nominated and declared elected.
Mr Warren, with Cr. Bennett as deputy, was appointed to the No. 14 District Roads Council.
“Few men have given so much of their time and energy in the interests of their fellow-men,” said Mr Warren, paying a tribute to Mr Roberts. “Service to others was certainly his aim and his achievement.”
