Sick Boxer May Miss Games
Press Association) WELLINGTON.
The Wellington featherweight boxer, R. Redden, appears to have Tost his chances of representing New Zealand in this year’s Empire Games at Jamaica.
Redden failed to appear in a trial match arranged specially for him on Wednesday night. According to a doctor’s report Redden was confined to bed with gastroenteritis. He was to have fought a feather-weight, H. Clements, of Taranaki, in a bout intended to justify his trip to Kingston.
The Olympic and British Empire Games Association selectors chose Redden for
the games on condition that he proved himself up to standard by June 30. It now seems unlikely that the Wellington association or any other association wilT be able to arrange another bout for Redden in such a short period.
A member of the selection panel, Mr P. N. Robinson, attended the boxing especially to see Redden fight The chairman of the New Zealand boxing selection panel, Mr D. Tipping, said that Redden’s case was now out of the hands of the national boxing association.
He declined to comment on whether he thought the provisional selection had placed too great a strain on the 18-year-oTd Redden.
