COWDREY CHOSEN

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) LONDON.

M. C. Cowdrey will captain England in the second cricket test against the West Indies, starting at Lord’s next Thursday, the M.C.C. announced yesterday.

The reign of M. J. K. Smith, of Warwickshire, comes to an end after a run of 25 matches. After his failure with the bat in the first test at Old Trafford last week this was expected. Earlier in the season Smith said that unless he succeeded as a batsman, he was almost certain to lose his place. He made five and six in the first test.

Cowdrey, aged 33, did not play for Kent yesterday because of fibrositis in his shoulder, but it is not serious.
