THREE NEW PLAYERS IN LEAGUE TEAM
The Hornby forward, D. W. Moore, has withdrawn; three players will make their representative debut and several positional alterations have been made in the Canterbury Rugby League team to play Manawatu at the Show Grounds tomorrow.
This will be one of the first round matches in the Rothmans southern zone quadrangular tournament.
The other game will be between Otago and West Coast, the winners and losers will play off on Sunday. Moore has been replaced by W. E. Butterfield (Sydenham) who was dropped after playing poorly against New South Wales Country late last month. He has won favour in preference to W. A. Flavell (Marist). Had Flavell been reinstated, either M. H. Mohi (Marist) or G. J. Rosanowski (Linwood) would have moved from the second row to prop. More Penetration In an effort to put more penetration into the inside backs, the selectors have named the Kaiapoi centre, B. Williams, at stand-off half. A strong runner, Williams replaces P. V. Smith (Marist) who is being rested after his sterling defensive play against Auckland.
E. Kereopa (Linwood), who has played extensively at centre and wing but who now plays prop for his club, will make his debut on the wing. After being reserve in Canterbury’s three matches this
season, Rosanowski replaces Flavell.
The captain, P. M. V. White (Addington), has been moved to the wing and the faster and stronger runner, A. N. Amer (Papanui), will move from wing to partner B. W. Langton (Hornby) in the centres.
Two members of the squad, G. J. Abercrombie (Linwood) and C. C. Preece (Sydenham) have been released to play for their clubs. Two backs, Smith and R. A. Neiman C’ornby), will be the reserves but should a forward be injured either Kereopa or I. T. Drayton (Hornby) could move into the pack. The team is:—
Drayton; White, Amer,
Langton, Kereopa; Williams, G. H. Clarke (Papanui); J. L. White (Addington); Mohi, Rosanowski, Butterfield, W. P. Noonan (Linwood), J. H. Fisher (Addington). Coast Change
The former West Coast Rugby trialist wing, M. P. Brereton, has been added to the West Coast squad for the tournament as a replacement for the 1965 Kiwi, L. P. Brown.
Only 19 years of age, Brereton is a track sprinter in the summer and is big enough to have played in the forwards in junior grades. This is his first season of Rugby League.
