Moorhouse Avenue
Sir, —Much of the congestion in the central city at traffic lights appears to be caused by vehicles turning right at peak periods. If these right-hand turns were barred at peak periods, as they often are by traffic officers on point duty, then I am sure that congestion would be eased considerably. I agree with I. W. Young that traffic lights in series must hinder traffic flow unless they are synchronised. This is no untried theory but is proven the world over, as is the flashing yellow light system for off-peak hours at intersections. Who among us has not been needlessly delayed at the Moorhouse ave-nue-Colombo street intersection when it is clear that there is no other traffic about? Varian J. Wilson extraordinarily equates traffic flow with dangerous driving, and so the views he states on this topic are valueless.—Yours, etc., FODIOR. June 9, 1966.
