THE NEW RAILWAY STATION at Arthur’s Pass should be opened early in October, said Mr J. C. Sandford, the Railways Department’s district engineer, yesterday. It replaces a wooden building burnt down in 1963. It will be 130ft long and 26ft wide, in a chalet style to blend with the mountain scenery and the architecture of other modern buildings at Arthur’s Pass. Cladding of the steep roof with plastic-finished galvanised-iron tiles is almost completed, and work is progressing on the exterior of local stone. The interior has been completed, and the lining is about to be started.
