‘WATCH YOUR STEP’
Pedestrian Safety
A Dominion-wide pedestrian safety campaign with the slogan “Watch your Step” will start on June 13. Its aim is to bring home to pedestrians the dangers they face on the road, particularly during the winter months. The Transport Department says that many pedestrians are responsible for their own deaths or injuries because they disregard road rules. The most common offences are crossing the road carelessly and stepping out on to busy streets without looking, the department says. “It is often because of the intelligent anticipation of drivers that the toll is not considerably higher.” Often pedestrians contributed to their own deaths by wearing dark clothing at night “Pedestrians see a car's headlamps from a distance and probably feel that the motorist must also see them. They would be much wiser to assume that they have not been seen, and wait until the vehicle passes,” the department says.
