ROYAL SHOW SPACE
Overcoming Shortage Entries of cattle, sheep and pigs for the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Royal show this year would almost certainly be beyond the capacity of the pavilions at the Show Grounds, and the provision of temporary accommodation should be considered, the secretary-man-ager (Mr H. M. Studholme) reported to a meeting of the association’s general committee yesterday.
At the last Royal show the association was able to put about 1600 sheep in the pavilion by splitting pens to the limit of possibilities—“We could not have taken a dozen more.” There were 1880 entries.
In the cattle section, where there were about 600 individual cattle to deal with, the pavilion just held the dairy breeds and the beef cattle were put into Canterbury Court. The pavilion would now hold about 480 cattle. At the last Royal show, temporary covered pens were arranged for pigs at the north end of the pig pavilion—these could be built there again, Mr Studholme said. Additional cattle accommodation could possibly be provided in the area between Canterbury Court and the ring.
If lean-to type buildings were used, possibly 100 cattle could be accommodated. There was some scope for additional sheep pens along the back of the selling rings, where about 80 additional pens could be provided.
Mr Studholme said work on the show schedules was well forward and the advance schedule for the smaller sections would be posted this week.
