29 Debutantes Presented
Twenty-nine past pupils of Sacred Heart College were presented to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) in the Winter Garden last evening.
They each carried a red and white posy which they had received from the Rev. Mother Prioress of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions earlier in the evening. This was the 21st debutante ball of the Sacred Heart College Past Pupils’ Association and a red, white and gold scroll, decorated in the college crest in honour of the jubilee, was spotlighted by coloured fluorescent lights for a backdrop to the presentation.
Later, the patroness of the association (Mrs A. P. Aspell) cut the birthday cake which was iced in the school colours.
Before the close of the presentation, five past pupils who were presented at the first debutante ball were presented to the Bishop by Mrs Aspell. They were Mesdames S. Barry (nee Ryan), B. Simmons (nee Sloan), M. Regan (nee Mullins), E. Silcock (nee Topp), M. Clark (nee McGrade).
The guests, who were received by the president of the Sacred Heart College Past Pupils’ Association, Mrs A. E. B. Turner, included: the Deputy Mayor, Mr H .P. Smith, and Mrs Smith; the Right Rev. Monsignor J. Finerty, the Rev. Father G. McGinty, the Rev. Father L. Evatt, rector of St. Bede’s College, Very Rev. Father J. Cunneen, Bro. Maurice, director of Xavier College, Bro. G. Donaldson, representing St Thomas’s College, and priests
of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and of the surrounding parishes, and re-
presentatives of the following kindred associations: St Mary’s College, Villa Maria College, Dominican College, Sacre Coeur Alumnae, St. Margaret’s College, Te Wai Pounamu College, St Kevin’s College, St. Bede's College, Xavier College, St. Thomas’s College, and representatives of the Sacred Heart ParentTeacher Association. Members of the ball committee were the president Mrs A. E. B. Turner; vicepresidents, Mesdames L. Watson and W- F. Brown; treasurer, Mrs A. Carpinter; secretary, Mrs B. F. Clark. Mrs Turner wore a simply styled gold lurex lame gown with trapeze neckline. The bell shaped skirt featured a flat bow at the back.
Mrs Watson wore a gown in embossed midnight blue brocade which featured empireline with floating panel at back. Mrs Brown chose a gown of Swiss-embroidered brocade, patterned in peacock and black tonings, featuring a scooped neckline, with an unbroken line to hem.
The debutantes, trained by Mrs W. Wilson, were:—Sylvia Bradley, Jennifer Carr, Sherrin Carruthers, Christine Cassidy, Anne Chappell, Pamela Clark, Helen Consedine. Elizabeth Corliss, Marie De Roo, Delia Francis, Jillian Freeman, Virginia Glucina, Helen Glubb, Doreen Goldstone, Elizabeth Healey, Margaret Hurley, Maria Hurley, Mary Martin, Pauline Moran, Phillipa O’Connell, Mary O’Loughlin, Margaret O’Malley, Helen Robb, Josephine Samuels, Sandra Sinclair.
