Liberal Party Plans
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) BRISBANE, June 7.
The Liberal Party hopes to contest all 18 House of Representative seats in the Queensland Federal Election late this year, including the seats held by the Country Party.
The Liberal Party state executive today called for applications from persdns seeking Liberal endorsement for all seats in the elections. This decision seems likely to mean three-cornered contests in seven electorates. It also means that the Liberals will be opposing two sitting Country Party members —both of them Ministers. They are the deputyFederal Country Party leader. Mr Charles Adermann, Minister for Primary Industries, and the Territories Minister, Mr Charles Barnes. The State Country Party president. Mr J. Ahern, described the Liberal move as a “retrograde step.” He said that never before had either party created three-cornered contests against Ministers.
Cotton Fire.—Japanese firemen today put out a fire which had been smouldering for two days in a 600-ton cargo of cotton aboard the 7305-ton Taiwan freighter Chungking Victory In Yokohama harbour. The Japanese Maritime Safety Agency said the extent of the fire-damage had not yet been determined.—Tokyo, June 7.
