Ruhr Miners To Strike

More than 180,000 Ruhr coal-miners and office staff will go on strike on June 23 to support pay demands, the Mine Workers’ Union announced today. The strike follows the breakdown of talks last month between employers and union leaders. The union demanded extra pay and benefits totalling about 8.5 per cent. Strike action was decided on after a ballot last Wednesday in which 88.1 per cent of 182,851 union members voted for a stoppage.
