Hat-Trick Habit
The 19-year-old Canterbury centre-forward, A Caine, has formed a 1966 habit, his club, New Brighton, fervently hopes he will never break., In his four appearances at English Park this season Caine has scored a hattrick: his fifth match there will be against the holder and Hurley Shield champion, Christchurch City, in the semi-finals of the Chatham Cup on Saturday.
Caine’s run of hat-tricks at English Park have been • against Hornby United (second division league game), Shirley-Nomads (Chatham Cup), Technical Old Boys (Chatham Cup) and South Canterbury, The latest was on Monday when he netted three times making his debut for the Canterbury senior team, against South Canterbury. Brighton, the second division leader and the only senior club with a 100 per cent record this season, has been the 1966 Chatham Cup “pant-killer” with its victories over ShirleyNomads and Technical, each by an overwhelming 5-1 margin. Caine was there with three goals on each occasion. *
On Saturday the sft 7in Caine will clash with the 6ft 3in Christchurch City playercoach, G. Evans, in the season’s most intriguing “David and Goliath” battle. Evans is the complete master of centre-forwards in the air. Caine is one of the hardest and most accurate kickers of the ball in Canterbury. Even the best of habits are hard to break: City and Brighton have equal interest in whether Caine can make it five in a row.
