Lail Beats Santana

The American champion, M. Santana, of Spain, was surprisingly beaten in the third round of the Beckenham tennis tournament yesterday. Santana went down, 2-6, 5-7, to the Indian number three, P. Lail. Santana had recently recovered from a shoulder injury which has kept him out of tennis for a month. The American Negro, A. Ashe, went close to defeat in his second round match against a 20-year-old English player, P. Curtis.

Ashe saved three match points before going on to win, 11-9, 4-6, 7-5. Later, the Australian. F. Stolle, seeded fifth, had to struggle to defeat the 35-year-old British player, J. R. Barrett, 6-4, 6-8, 8-6. L. A. Gerrard, of New Zealand. had an easy win over the Russian. S. Likhachev, 6-2, 6-4, in the second round.
