Making A Return
Musicals are making a big come-back in Hollywood. Aided by the vast international success of “The Sound of Music” and “My Fair Lady,” they have kicked off the reputation of being boxoffice poison in the aTI-import-ant foreign-language markets, and several studios are now about to launch musical block-busters, “The Times” reported. First away is “Bloomer Girl,” a large-scale version of the old Harold Arlen Broadway hit refurbished as a vehicle for Shirley MacLaine and Harry Betafonte and to be directed by George Cukor, director of “My Fair Lady” on film. Hot on the heels of this will come “Funny Girl,” with of course Barbra Steisand repeating her Broadway role as Fanny Brice, “Oliver!” to be made in England with Peter Sellers as Fagin, and "Wildcat,” which starred Lucille Balt. There will even be one original: Gene Kelly will direct a specially written musical set in Paris and built round a score made up entirety of hitherto unpublished Gershwin songs.
