FELL IN FLOAT

Hal’s Choice Put Down (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. A valuable trotting horse was •hot in a Dunedin street yesterday after it fell and Injured Its spine In a motor-float that was taking it from Ashburton to Invercargill. The horse is believed to have been Hal s Choice, a six-year-old gelding owned by Mr Fred Harris, of Tokanui, Southland, and trained by Mr A. Skinner, of Hedgehope, Southland. Four other trotting horses travelling in the same float were uninjured. The horse had been racing at Ashburton. Witnesses said that the driver of the float had to brake suddenly In the evening rush hour traffic near the corner of Cumberland and Frederick streets. The horse fell and was hurt. The horse was removed from the float under the supervision of police and a veterinary surgeon and laid on the pavement in a quieter street. After examination It was shot.

Mr M. Skinner, son of the horse's trainer, said that after hearing a telephone description of the dead animal he had little doubt that it was Hal’s Choice.

“He could have been a promising horse,’’ he said. "He had one win and was placed several times this season."
