WELLINGTON, June 7. Maori apprentices, from the trade training schemes introduced by the Government, had a high reputation with
employers and a better than average pass rate in the preliminary trade examinations, said the Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Hanan). “The trade training schemes are making a significant and important contribution to the industrial develop-
ment of New Zealand and to the Maori peoples’ place in modern society,” he said. “Although there are now 261 Maori youths permanently in training at any one time,

There were many fields in which the progress of the Maori people had been marked during the last few years. “One of the most spectacular is that of trade training,” he said. “Recent progress shows
clearly what can be achieved from what has been described as the ‘great untapped reservoir of skill* in New Zealand.”
