COMMUNISM IN AUST.
Investigation Sought (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A > SYDNEY, June 7. Returned servicemen in Queensland this week urged the Federal Government to conduct an investigation into communism in Australia, and to hold a referendum asking whether the Communist Party should be declared an illegal organisation. At its annual conference, the Queensland Returned Services’ League passed motions calling for a Government White Paper on communism and an investigation into Communist infiltration into the Australian education system at “primary, secondary and tertiary levels.”
Mr J. A. Sherriff, president of the North Queensland branch of the R.S.L., told the conference: “We Australians are today presented with the enigma of having Australian forces fighting the spread of communism in South-east Asia, while at the same time we have a minority organisation within our midst, apparently with the blessing of our Government, doing everything possible to sabotage the efforts of our forces overseas.”
