District Trade Officer To Be Appointed Soon
The State Services Commission was "pretty close” to making and announcing the appointment of a successor to the District Officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce in Christchurch (Mr P. J. Carroll), said the acting secretary of the department (Mr K. L. Press) yesterday "Some of the applicants have been interviewed," said Mr Presse.
Mr Carroll was recently appointed district officer of the department in Auckland. He will take up his new appointment on June 15.
Mr Press said that his department hoped that it would know who Mr Carroll's successor would be in Christchurch by the end of this week. He also said that it was possible that there might be a period when no-one occupied Mr Carroll’s Christchurch job.
“The ‘acting business’ is common enough throughout the public service,” said Mr Pi-ess.
Mr Press said that his department was just as anxious
as anyone to get it cleared up. "Christchurch is an increasingly important post," he said. “District officers, with the present policy of decentralisation, are playing a more and more important role with the department “A great deal of work that used to be centralised through Wellington is being farmed out to district officers in Christchurch, Auckland and Dunedin.
“Mueh import licensing work is now being dealt with in these centres," Mr Press said.
