Kidney Graft Unsuccessful
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 7. One of two kidney transplants performed 16 days ago at Auckland Hospital has failed. The other gives hope of being a success.
The transplants were the first attempted between unrelated people in New ZealandDoctors said tonight that they had been obliged to remove the kidney grafted into Mrs Beverley McKinlay, a 26-year-old Dunedin housewife. It had failed to function, said a spokesman. Mrs McKinlay and a 36-year-old man received their new kidneys from a young person who died of a cerebral hemorrhage. The man, Mr James Grat-
tan, of Te Aroha, is making good progress. His condition is giving no cause for concern.
Mrs McKlnlay’s kidney functions have been taken over by the hospital’s artificial kidney machine. She was helped by this machine, and by a similar one at Dunedin, before the transplant operation.
The hospital spokesman said it was hoped to perform a second transplant operation, but this depended on finding a suitable kidney and the condition of Mrs McKinlay.
