R.S.A. Debate On Building Plans
A proposal that a single-storey building be considered as an alternative to the planned two-storey building for the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association was rejected by the executive committee of the association last evening.
Mr J. Green told the committee that no progress had been made with the new building in the last eight years.
“We have just wasted our time duck shoving about,” he said. “We already decided on a two-storey building last July.” “It was not finally decided,” Mr D. N. Harland said, “and not all of us have been duck shoving.” Mr T. McCormick said that the plan was a good idea. It meant that something else was available if it were found impossible to proceed with the two-storey builuing. “This does not prejudice in any way the present proposal,” he said. “We should be able to consider all alternatives and not waste any more time.”
The president (Mr D. Barrett) said that all the mem-
bers of the committee must share the responsibility for wasting time. “I can’t understand the executive turning down any proposal at this stage,” Mr G. McMillan said. “We should consider all the possibilities now to save time if we cannot proceed with the present plans.”
Mr K. Humphreys said that the discussion was suspiciously the same as one which had been held two meetings before. “At that time we voted against any alternative plan,” he said. "Let’s just get on with it,” Mr S. J. Geary said. Mr Barrett ruled the motion to consider an alternative plan out of order when the committee could not reach a unanimous decision.
A motion by Mr A. S. Farrar that the president's ruling be referred to the association’s honorary solicitor was defeated.
