Crete City Sends Medal, Citation
(Hew Zealand Preu Aseociation) WELLINGTON, June 6. The city of Agios Nicholaos, Crete, has sent a medallion to New Zealand to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.
The president of the Cretan Association of New Zealand (Mr E. S. Sarris) said today that the medallion and citation arrived in New Zealand at the week-end. The citation reads: “The Mayor and councillors of the city of Agios Nicholaos, Crete, met specially on the 16th of May, 1966, and decided to express the sincere gratitude of the people of Agios Nicholaos city to the heroic New Zealand soldiers who fought in Crete during the Battle of Crete 25 years ago. As a token of gratitude the city of Agios Nicholoas presents through the Cretan Association of New Zealand this memorial medal.”
Mr Sarris said: “I made a presentation similar to this to the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) last week, and on behalf of the Mayors
and citizens of the cities of Canea, Rethimnon and Heracleon I will be making presentations to the Dominion headquarters of the Returned Services Association, the Mayors of Wellington and Auckland, the Ex-prisoners of War Association, the Australian Imperial Forces Association and the Crete Veterans’ Association."
