LENINGRAD HOOLIGANS
Arrests Rise By 100 p.c.
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, June 6. Arrests for hooliganism doubled in Leningrad last year, and ordinary citizens have been urged to do more to help police watch the hoodlums.
The 100 per eent rise in petty hooliganism compared with 1964 was reported by the police chief of Russia’s second city in a local newspaper article headed: “Don’t Be Soft On Hooligans.” Last year there was a 25 per cent increase in arrests for drunkenness.
More than 40 per cent of hooligan cases were recorded in the last 10 days of each month—after young workers drew their pay. Sixty per cent of all hooligans were drunk when committing crimes.
