On Course First Leg To Lord Cass

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. Lord Cass in the Novice Stakes and Glamis Lad in the Southern Improvers’ Handicap paid £l7 7s to win the on-course double at Wingatui yesterday. In a pool of £2410 15s Lord Cass was the second-leg favourite with 459 tickets.

Lord Cass recorded a good performance to win after being last away. He moved up to be handy into the straight and ran on to outstay Decimal Coin by half a head.

Decimal Coin was never far away and finished solidly. Windvale Girl, which was handy throughout, beat the favourite, Deseray, for third by a head. Glamis Lad proved a class above his opponents in the Southern Improvers’ Handicap. He shared the pace to the straight and drew away to win untested by five lengths. Belfie, which was handy throughout, was best of the others, holding the first-day novice winner, Mystery Cloud, by half a length for second. Captain Howe came home well for fourth, ahead of Arabian Light.

Castle Rock, the beaten on the first day, made

amends in the Otago Steeplechase. Favoured by the longer distance he outstayed First Watch to win easily by six lengths. Castle Rock was kept behind the leaders until approaching the three furlongs. His rider. Langford, then sent him round the leaders and from there he never appeared in danger. First Watch, which disputed the pace with the favourite, Lord Fair, in the back stretch, held on for second five lengths clear of Myfilou, which was always well placed but lost ground with a bad jump near the mile.

Barney, Tidal Rip and Bayline, came home at intervals clear of Lord Fair, which was beaten at the three furlongs. Pahi scored his third successive win as a jumper when he again outstayed the favourite, Istan Light, in the June Hack Hurdles. The two followed the pacemaker, Maguire's Peter, which opened a sevenlength lead in the early stages. Pahi and Istan Light closed on the pacemakers at the three furlongs and Pahi led over the last two furlongs to win by three lengths. Istan Light did not jump well, but heltt Knight by five lengths. *
