“The Special Service DUNEDIN. Castle Gregory, a horse sent home to die 18 months ago with a heart ailment, recovered to win the Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Wingatui yesterday, pay £lOB Is 6d, and set the stage for a £969 Is double.
The second leg of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s T.A.B-. double, the Empire Handicap, was won by the top-weight, Bold Venture.
Castle Gregory, trained at Wingatui by H. A. Anderton for Mr J. J. Woods and his son, Mr J. K. Woods, of Winton, was a sick horse when returned to his owners, but under the care of the Invercargill veterinary surgeon, Mr C, H. G. Irvine, the Cassock gelding never looked back. Castle Gregory left hack company with a win at Invercargill last month and yesterday had only his second start in open company. He carried 7-13, 61b overweight, with D. N.’ Hadfield in the saddle. His owners had £1 each invested on his chances and Mr J. K. Woods also had the second leg covered on the double. Bold Venture’s win in the Empire Handicap was his third success in his last four races. It was a most impressive performance under’ the top-weight of 9-12. He disputed the pace throughout, coming away in the final stages. In a total doubles pool of
£24,644 ss, the Riccarton pair. Tumble and Misjudge, formed the favourite bracket with 20,375 5s tickets. Castle Gregory carried 509 tickets (71 on-course) and 84 o! these (16 on-course) were reinvested on Bold Venture. GLADAUB LEADS
Gladaub worked clear seven furlongs from home in the Queen Elizabeth Mile and racing to the half-mile led Mosque and Ski with Tumble, Flying York and Sabell in the next line ahead of Glenmorven. Gladaub had a break of three
lengths on Ski and Sabell into the straight and was still clear at the furlong, but shortening stride. . , Castle Gregory, which had raced in the middle of the field, challenged inside the furlong and held off a late run from Red Siren to win by half a length. There were two lengths to Mogambo. which also came from the rear, and threequarters of a length to Gladaub. Misjudge came from well back for fifth ahead of Just Peter. Big Smoke, Mosque, and Sabell. The favourite, Tumble, faded to twelfth. DISPUTED PACE Bold Venture, ridden by B. J Anderton, disputed the pace with the light-weight, Donnaway, in the Empire Handicap and drew away over the final stages to win by a length and a quarter.
