Daughter Of False Step Succeeds
Miss Step, a daughter of a former champion in False Step, made a successful race debut at Ashburton yesterday when she won the second leg of the on-course double, the First Trial Handicap. She is raced in partnership by False Step’s former owner, Mr J. Smyth, of Christchurch, the president of the New Brighton Trotting Club, Mr H. E. Cook, of Ashburton, and her Ashburton trainer, R. J. Jones.
Miss Step, which will race next at Nelson next Saturday, was a shade slow at the start. She sprinted to second just after Disneyland took the lead with nine furlongs left. She followed Disneyland into the last furlong and took a short lead soon afterwards. She fought back strongly when challenged and won by half a neck.
Roydon Frost came home well from a handy position for second, a short length in front of the unlucky Champagne, which did not get clear inside’ the furlong. Disneyland tired to fourth, well clear of Silver Medoro.
The first leg, the Autumn Handicap, resulted in an easy win for Compromise, which led all the way. She was never really extended and won by two lengths and a half from Loyal Tryax, which made up ground. Sal’s Hope made up ground for third, but was well beaten. Dawn Peterson and Flying Step were next. The win favourite, Surrey Hills was slow away and it
was late when L. M. Keenan tried to improve with her. She received a poor run and finished seventh. Honest Ken wrecked his chance at the start.
Remember When, a sister to a champion in When, was too good for her rivals in the Longbeach Handicap. She was driven confidently by W. J. Doyle and got up to win by half a length from a strong finisher in Norwood Lass and Say Diana. Sidi Barzani tired to fourth, ahead of Madam Scott and Sleeman. Outstanding Glen Dee recorded an outstanding winning run in the two-mile Mayfield Handicap, recording 4min 29 l-ssec, a smart effort in the conditions. He took the lead after five furlongs and from then trotted much too strongly for his rivals, winning by a short length from Bobby’s Girl, which ran on strongly. Cleome, which was never far away, fought on for third
two lengths behind Bobby's Girl, with a good gap to King’s Cord and Del Reno. The 2/2 favourite, Logan Count, raced about six places back on the inside. He tried to improve outside the furlong, but was squeezed for room and broke. He finished eleventh.
Soldier Gal gave M. Holmes his lone driving success at the meeting when she held off a determined challenge from Ulight by half a neck in the Winter Handicap. Soldier Gal led from the seven furlongs and . responded gamely when challenged. Ulight, after being a fair way back early, was handy over the last half-mile. She fought on gamely for her placing. Three lengths and a half away Cindy took third by half a head from Dryden Smoke, which finished fast from near the tail of the field at the straight entrance. Waitaki Smoke, Tahu. Sir Hugh, Ingleburn, Kingster, Chief Smile, Royal Melody and Queensway were next in close order. Queensway was slow away, but improved to be handy at the straight entrance, only to drop out inside the final furlong.
