High Standard Of Coaching
Gymnastics in Canterbury should benefit from the high standard of coaching given by leading Auckland gymnasts at the regional gymnastic coaching school held in Christchurch on Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the St Andrew’s College gymnasium and yesterday morning at the Crichton
Cobber’s Club. A large proportion of the girls in a class of more than 50 showed exquisite gratae, skill and agility in performing flow acrobatics which a few years ago would rarely be seen except among leading professional performers. Classes were conducted by G. Howard, the national champion in 1965, M. Gotz, a noted coach, and Mrs M..
Duncan. The South Island champion, G. Hiseman, also assisted with instruction and demonstrations.
A number of school gymnastic instructors and physical education teachers were observing and taking notes during the classes, which covered basic as well as advanced exercises in most branches of the sport. The classes would stimulate still further improvement among gymnasts in the South Island, said the president of the Canterbury Gymnastic Association, Mr K. O. Plunkett, who attended most of the sessions. The coaching school came at an excellent time to provide extra polish and correct interpretation for the forthcoming South Island championships
at Nelson and the New Zealand championships at Wellington. Christchurch had applied to hold the New Zealand championships next year, said Mr Plunkett
