Research On N.Z. Women Planned

A new organisation, the Society for Research on Women in New Zealand, has been formed in Wellington. The impetus for the society came from a recent course of lectures on the changing role of women.

A member of the Wellington City Council, Miss M. J. Clark, presided at the first meeting.

The society aims to further th® interests of women in New Zealand. It will examine the attitudes of individuals, groups and the community to the education of girls and women, their employment and needs.

The findings will be publicised and any changes desirable will be sought. The new society will cooperate with other societies and organisations.

The first objective will be to conduct a sociological survey on a national basis. Women will be questioned about their education; their aims in life and how their education and experience have prepared them for their present life; and their hopesOther questions concern outside employment, use of full potential, and getting the most out of life.

Council for Educational Research and other bodies.

Developing its membership is the society’s most immediate task. It urgently requires more members throughout New Zealand. Members will collect relevant material, arid investigate social and community services, retraining facilities, adult education, cultural activities, term® of employment and home help available in their areas.

Interviewing and checking questionnaires in preparation for tabulation will also be included.

Officers are: president, Mrs M. J. Mowbray; vice-president, Mrs M. Bulock; secretary, Mrs M. K. Shields; treasurer, Mrs M. A. Fitzgerald; council, Mesdames J. Bastings. L. Crosby, A. Harlen, A. Hill, F Mason, A. Ward, Miss L Edgar Mr H. J. Wakelin.
