TRAFFIC CHECKS
Extension To Winter The Transport Department will continue snap checks of motor-vehicles throughout the winter, according to the Chief Traffic Officer (Mr E. Wilson). Mr Wilson said that in the last week of the month’s official check, which ended on May 31, 356 vehicles were examined, 63 traffic offence notices were issued after the check, and 90 warnings were given.
In the same period, 35 bicycles were checked. Cyclists were issued with a traffic offence notice and 25 were warned.
Insufficient lighting was still the worst offence, Mr Wilson said. Faulty headlights were the most common, and as well as being inadequate, many were badly adjusted. Often there was no tail-light. Mr Wilson said that a surprising number of vehicles stopped had no warrant of fitness. Of the 356 vehicles checked, 19 had none. This was more than 5 per cent. Unlighted bicycles were also the worst offenders among those checked, Mr Wilson said
