Season’s Kill Down By 47% At Fairfield
The number of sheep killed this season at Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s Fairfield works was 47 per cent fewer than the total killed last season. A spokesman for the company said that ewes were not available to be killed this season. The season concluded at Fairfield last Thursday.
Lambs killed this season showed a drop of 6 per cent on the total number of lambs killed last season. The lamb kill represented more than 75 per cent of the total kill this season. Last season there was a record total of 825,000 sheep and lambs killed at the Fairfield works. Detailed killing figures for this season were not available. After the record kill last season, farmers found it necessary to retain their ewes
to build up flock numbers while an abundance of good feed was available.
This season, the weight of the carcases at the works was better than last season, although the proportion of over-fat lambs rejected for export was higher. One reason for this was given as the abundance of feed, and another, that lambs were being held longer than was desirable for drafting.
The spokesman said the same number of butchers had been employed this season as
last, and the works had been very busy until the Christmas break.
The season slackened off after the break to the extent that one chain was stopped early in February and a second was stopped in midMarch.
Last week’s closing of the works was the earliest for several years. An unusual feature of the season was the fact that no time was lost through labour disputes. Ample labour was available and union-company relations were healthy, the spokesman said.
