Not So Friendly

Christchurch firemen no longer feel friendly disposed towards prisoners at Paparua with whom they have played an annual friendly Rugby football match.

In this year’s game one fireman suffered head injuries which required an operation in Burwood Hospital, another had chest and thigh injuries and is still off duty, and a third had knee injuries and was off duty for two days.

When he reported the injuries to the Metropolitan Fire Board last evening, the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) said: “I think it will be the finish. We have tried to help these fellows in a bit of recreation, bnt they don’t reciprocate.” Mr W. E. Olds: It’s always a tough game. What do you expect at Paparua? Mr Osmond said that one of the firemen had .been seriously injured by a punch.
