ORGANIST TO RETIRE

33 Y ears With Church

For 33 years organist and choirmaster of the Durham street Methodist Church, Mr W. Melville Lawry was entertained by the church last evening on his retirement.

The minister of the church (the Rev. W. S. Dawson) said that Mr Lawry was well known throughout New Zealand because of his work with broadcast services and the recorded music of the choir. The latest contribution was a group of eight Easter hymns used by the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation on Easter Day this year. Mr Lawry will be succeeded by Mr W. R. Hawkey, lecturer in music at the University of Canterbury.
