Derek Lionel Douglas Suckling, aged 17, a student, was fined £lO and his driver’s licence was cancelled for a year when he was convicted by Mr E A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of driving in a manner which might have been dangerous on Fendalton road on January 28. He pleaded not guilty and was represented by Mr R. L. Kerr. Alexander Roderick Mathieson, a civil servant, said he was driving home from work along Fendalton road. He was approaching the Holmwood road intersection when he was passed by a car travelling at between 40 and 45 miles an hour. The overtaking vehicle started to come back on its correct side of the road when the driver decided to pass the car in front of witness. As he did this he came to the bend on the wrong side of the road. A bus which was approaching from the opposite direction had to brake and take evasive action. The defendant’s car swerved sharply to the left and then to the right and just missed the front of the bus. When the line of traffic stopped for the traffic officer on point duty at the Straven road intersection he obtained the number of the car which had been involved in the overtaking movement, Mathieson said.
