MOVE FAILS
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. A move to bring external affairs to the top of the Labour Party conference agenda was defeated today. An Auckland delegate, Mr I. A. Beckett, urged that external affairs be brought from the bottom of the agenda and considered at the earliest possible time.
It was obvious the conference would go on to Friday, but some delegates would have to leave on Thursday night, he said.
Mr A. G. Goldsmith,
Railways Tradesmen’s Association delegate, opposed the move and argued that delegates had known all along the conference would go till Friday. The president (Mr N. E. Kirk) said that yesterday the agenda committee’s report had been adopted unanimously. The conference had been circulated as a five-day session.
“Last year you were most critical of me because the women’s report and the farmers’ report were put far down on the agenda, and social security was left to the last,” said Mr Kirk.
