POWERCUT IN NORTH
Prompt Action By Controllers (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 11. All power to Wellington city, and water heating power in Auckland, was cut off at 15.45 p.m. today. Intentional cuts were made by the Electricity Department to avert the possibility of a widespread North island power failure. A fault at Benmore cut off all power to the North Island. The system rapidly became overloaded and 140,000 kilowatts were then taken off the North Island load to prevent widespread loss of supply. Within eight minutes of the cut, power from the South Island was restored and the strain on the North Island system corrected. The district engineer of the Electricity Department (Mr R S. S. Meredith) said in Christchurch that Benmore had been transmitting a light load with only one valve group in operation. This valve group, which changes alternating current into direct current, tripped out at 5.43 p in., and transmission to the North Island ceased. The service was restored at 5.51 p.m.
