‘Andy Stewart Show ’ Humorous, Lively
Even the canniest Scot should not mind paying to see the “Andy Stewart Show” at the Majestic Theatre—he is guaranteed to get his money’s worth of lively music and cheerful Scottish humour. The star of the evening, who was here in 1963, received a warm welcome back. In Mr Stewart’s case, that well-worn epithet “Versatile" really applies. He can be sincere _—but mercifully unsentimental—in his serious songs, and a moment later wickedly funny with his take-offs of well-known pop singers. bored while Andy Stewart was telling his jokes. Only the leader managed to appear as if he enjoyed them as much as the audience did. Joe Gordon had done his homework: “1 knew I was back in Christchurch as soon as I reached my hotel and they asked me for a donation for ttj toon hall.’’ Mr Gordon’s best number was an appealing duet with a younger member of the cast, attractive Sally Logan. Max Kay’s robust voice and genial personality added to the success of the evening, and he achieved a considerable feat by successfully reviving “Scotland The Brave,” apparently thrashed to death years ago. An extra Scottish touch was provided by members of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Scottish Country Dance Society, and the City of Christchurch Ladies* Highland Pipe Band reminded listeners, most agreeably, that the bagpipes, in spite of the piano accordion, are still Scotland’s national instrument
