Purpose Of M.E. Visit Obscure

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter— Copyright) CAIRO, May 11. Official talks between the Soviet Premier, Alexei Kosygin, and Egypt’s President Nasser begin in Cairo today amidst increasing speculation as to the exact reason for the Russian leader’s visit to the United Arab Republic.

Most observers say the visit indicates a growing Soviet interest in Middle Eastern affairs, but they are still divided over whether it is politically or economically inspired. The purpose of Mr Kosygin’s visit—his first official trip outside the Communist world since he came to power more than 18 months ago—has not yet been stated. Mr Kosygin received a tremendous welcome from Egyptian crowds when he arrived

in Cairo yesterday to start the eight-day visit. During a speech at an official banquet in his honour last night, Mr Kosygin confined himself to an exposition of known Soviet views on a number of world problems and made no hint as to the content of today’s talks with President Nasser. The visit comes as the Middle East becomes increasingly polarised between the Socialist President Nasser and the forces of tradition represented by King Feisal, ot Saudi Arabia.

President Nasser already gets Soviet military and economic aid from Russia, while America backs Saudi Arabia. Mr Koskyin’s visit could lead to a new SovietU.A.R. aid agreement.
