Obituary ARCHDEACON G. H. GAVIN

(N Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10. Archdeacon Gordon Hay Gavin died in New Plymouth today. He was 82. Born in Wellington, Archdeacon Gavin was the son of the Secretary to the Treasury, and first studied to be a dentist. He served as a chaplain in Egypt, France and Belgium in the First World War and was mentioned in dispatches. He studied dentistry in New Zealand, Canada and England. He was a qualified coin collector, stamp collector, member of the New Plymouth Historical Society, the New Plymouth Literary Society and the council of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society. He made a large collection of coins of the Roman Empire which he presented to the Otago Museum. Archdeacon Gavin became vicar at W’aitara in 1918, vicar of St. Mary’s, New Plymouth in 1932 and was appointed Archdeacon of Taranaki in 1930. He retired in 1960. MR H. T. KING I.V.Z.
