Passport Barrier To Be Lowered

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter —Copyright) LONDON, March 13. The passport barrier dividing incoming passengers into “aliens” and “British and Commonwealth” is to be lowered in an experiment at London airport this year.

A Home Office spokesman said tonight: “It is intended to speed clearance of passengers through passport controls.” It is not known when the experiment will take place or at what section of London Airport. But if it is successful all new arrivals in British ports and airports will go through the same doors instead of being segregated. Reports that Customs and

Excise were to streamline their system for clearing passengers by adopting a Swiss method were described by the department spokesman as “pure speculation.” In the Swiss method passengers with nothing to declare go to one customs officer and then collect their luggage. Those with duty to pay go to a separate area. Spot checks and heavy penalties for offenders enforce the system.
