TUSSOCK RUN

FEDERATED Farmers (South Canterbury) Pasture Competition Committee in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture will hold a field day on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m. on the property of Mr A. D. Mackenzie, Takotu, Waihaorunga. The property is described as possibly one of the most highly developed low tussock ( runs in South Canterbury. Situated about 18 miles west of Waimate it consists of 2500 acres of easy to steep tussock country on which no cultivation work is undertaken.

Before the development programme was started in 1953 the property was carrying 1400 Corriedale ewes, 600 hoggets or dry sheep and about. 30 cattie. This year .3800 ewes will be put to the ram and there are 850 hoggets and dry sheep and also 343 cattle including 200 cows. The lambing percentage this season was about 105 per cent and in the last two years about 2600 iambs have been drafted off the mothers. Wool weights average about 101 b a head or 181 b to the acre.

About half the property is topdressed each year with IJcwt of sulphur superphosphate and D.D.T. has been applied to the whole property.

With the very 7 favourable growing conditions experienced this year the property looks a picture at the present time.
