FIRE IN SHIP
Precautions At Port Fire, discovered at 3 p.m. yesterday in the number five lower hold of the freighter Testbank was quickly extinguished by Lyttelton firemen. The 6288-ton Testbank, commanded by Captain R. Angle, had just discharged bulk sulphur at number six wharf and was alongside the oil berth for bunkering before sailing for Dunedin. A Lyttelton Harbour Board pilot, Captain L. W. Davis, in charge of the Testbank when the fire was discovered, told the harbourmaster (Captain A. R. Champion), who alerted the Christchurch Fire Brigade. Captain Champion ordered the ship clear of the oil berth and she berthed at Gladstone Pier soon afterwards.
Both units of the Lyttelton Fire Brigade were waiting at the pier. A unit from Woolston and another from Christchurch arrived shortly afterwards.
A single freshwater hose from the mains was used by Lyttelton firemen. Breathing sets were worn.
By 4 p.m. the vessel was reported clear of danger and returned to the oil wharf to bunker. The Testbank sailed at 8.24 p.m.
