a carpenter, when he appeared for sentence on six charges of burglary committed on September 27 last year. Horne was ordered to pay £l5 costs on each charge and make restitution of £9O 6s. A condition of his probation was that he must live and work where directed. It was the first time Horne had been before the Court, the Magistrate said. BROKE WINDOW A 19-year-old girl, who grew impatient while waiting to make a telephone call and forced the door of the booth open, striking the woman who was inside, was convicted and fined £lO on a charge of assaulting Pauline Varnham on December 19 and £2 10s on a further charge ot wilfully damaging a window of the telephone booth valued at 10s on the same date. The girl, Huia Hona, a machinist, pleaded guilty to both charges and was ordered to pay 10s restitution. OBSCENE LANGUAGE An unemployed bushman. Michael Sydney Scott, aged 22. was convicted and fined £lO on a charge of using obscene language in Cathedral square on March 10. He pleaded guilty. CARELESS USE On a charge of careless use of a vehicle, Mohi Horua, aged 22, a plasterer (Mr G. T. Mahon), was convicted and fined £lO and disqualified for two months. Horua pleaded not guilty. TRAFFIC CHARGES On traffic charges brought by the police, offenders were dealt with as follows, with costs of £1 10s in each case: No driver’s licence: Geoffrey Hugh Parlane, £7 10s and disqualified for two months (no warrant of fitness, 10s); Thomas Rangi Tuuta, £lO, and disqualified for three months; Valmai Nancy Young, £7 10s, and disqualified for two months. Failed to give way: Leslie Howison Jones. £lO. Opened car door causing injury: Richard Marley Brown, £2. Richard Marley Brown. £2. Failed to stop at stop sign: Mervyn James Kedz’.ie, £5. No warrant of fitness: Allan James Parlane. 10s.

(Before Mr K H. S. Headlfen, S.M.) THREE CHARGES ‘'Since you are on probation and I consider it best that you be left in your job. I will not deal with your licence,” the Magistrate told Donald James Grieve, aged 19, a labourer (Mr P. G. S. Penlingtom, who was convicted on charges of using a motor vehicle carelessly, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to ascertain whether a person had been injured, all in Linwood avenue on November 13. Grieve, who pleaded not guilty to all three charges, was fined £l5 on the charge of failing to stop and was also ordered to attend a course of traffic lectures. He was fined £5 on the charge of careless use and was ordered to pay costs of £1 10s on the charge of failing to ascertain whether a person was injured CHARGE DISMISSED Dennis John Brewin, aged 17. a workman (Mr M. J. Glue) pleaded not guilty to a charge of using a motor vehicle carelessly on Linwood avenue on January 17. The charge was dismissed. (Before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.) FAILED TO STOP Douglas James Rennie, aged 17, a pastrv cook (Mr W. S. Smith) pleaded not guilty to a charge that on January 9 he had failed to stop his car m Cathedral square when signalled to do so by a constable. He was convicted and fined £7 10s. COSTS ONLY Archie Campbell Currie, aged 32. a traveller (Mr K. N. Hampton) pleaded not guilty to a charge of using a motor vehicle carelessly in Baisweil Junction road on October 19. He was convicted and ordered to pay costs of £1 10s and witnesses’ expenses of £4.

CHARGE AMENDED Kenneth Hardliner, aged 21, a sales representative (Mr A. P. C. Tipping) pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving at a dangerous speed in Ilam road on November 27. After the hearing of the evidence the charge was amended to driving carelessly. Gardiner pleaded guilty to that charge, and was fined £2O and his licence was cancelled for six months from March 18.
