CROWN FOR £285
fNZ. Press Association! MASTERTON, March 11. A 1935 Waitangi crown offered at public auction in Masterton was bought for £285 by Mr F. Taylor, a Wellington collector. This Was the highest price at the sale, the first of its kind in the Wairarapa.
A buyer from Carterton, who preferred to remain anonymous, bought a New Zealand 1935 threepence for £l5 ss, and another Wairarapa buyer, who also preferred anonymity, was the highest bidder for a set of New Zealand threepences from 1933 to 1965. Th • set included the 1956 “strapless” coin and sold for £2l.
Several private collect-
ors contributed to the sale, which included a number of early Australian and New Zealand tokens, and a variety of foreign currency.
Sold in separate lots, two New Zealand 1940 centennial half-crowns sold for £9 10s each, and a third sold for £9. A 1961 half-crown fetched £4 ss, and a 1944 one £4.
A £5 Queen Victoria gold piece dated 1887 began at £5O and rose quickly by £5 bids, selling for £77; a £2 gold piece from the same vear fetched £29.
An Edward VII Maundy set from 1906 sold for £l9 10s, and a proof set of Malawi's first issue of coins in 1964 brought £9.
